Global Leadership Classroom Assistant 2011

Co-develop and implement integrated, project-based curriculum for the Global Leadership Class (GL), currently taught at three Seattle area high schools. Coordinate with Seattle area non-profits to develop service learning projects that revolve around social and environmental justice issues. Carry out classroom visits to evaluate the effectiveness of curriculum and teaching tools. Conduct debriefing meetings with teachers; deliver written assessments following in-class visits. Contact artists, activists and community leaders to attend Global Leadership Class as guest speakers / lecturers. Assist in teaching course (prior experience required). Attend city-wide events with high school students that address issues of global and environmental justice. Facilitate discussions about these events and create follow-up assignments for students. Coordinate Adopt-A-School program in which Global Leadership students visit local elementary schools 5th graders to communicate their knowledge.
This position requires a commitment of 10+ hours a week for a minimum of 6 months. The schedule is flexible. This is an unpaid position.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience teaching and/or working with youth
- Experience in social and environmental justice issues
- Familiarity with popular education pedagogy and/or teaching techniques
- Second language and international travel experience helpful but not required
